Vague specs are a tax on the buyer's time
Here's a search query we see often: "Samsung LED TV backlight replacement." A customer once asked whether our LED strips could handle that job. Technically, they emit light. But our strips are built for architectural lighting—constant-current drivers, tight CRI tolerances, specific thermal behavior. Using them to replace a TV backlight is like wiring a commercial range to toast one slice of bread.
The honest answer was "no, you need a consumer-grade strip at a third of the price." The answer they got from another vendor was "yes, definitely"—followed by a quote that didn't mention the driver mismatch, and later a $600 re-installation bill.
That's the pattern I've learned to watch for. A vague spec sheet is a way of saying "we'll figure out the details after you've committed." And in my experience, the figure-it-out-later cost always lands on the buyer. (We track this. The most common failure we see in customer-provided specifications isn't price—it's incompleteness.)
The conventional wisdom says to always get multiple quotes. My experience reviewing hundreds of line items suggests the opposite: a single transparent quote is worth more than three quotes full of unspecified "yes, we can do that." I've learned to ask "what's NOT included" before I ask "what's the price." The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—almost always costs less in the end. Smart lighting is where this gets concrete. Zigbee light control is a great sales pitch: dimming, schedules, scene groups, all in one app. And when a vendor's app spotlight works the way it should—tap a fixture, adjust it, group it by sunset—it's genuinely impressive.
From the outside, it looks like smart lighting is simply a matter of buying "Zigbee" gear. The reality is different: Zigbee is a family of standards, and version differences make or break a project.
In our Q1 2024 quality audit, 30+ returns came back with smart-lighting compatibility as the root cause. Every single one had a spec sheet that said "Zigbee" and stopped there—no version number, no supported clusters, no hub requirements, no tested firmware.
That's why for our own Zigbee-compatible Samsung LED fixtures, we publish the coordinator requirements, supported clusters, and tested firmware versions in the datasheet itself. It's not fun documentation to write (note to self: it never is), but an integrator on site needs those details before they buy—not after, when the electrician is already standing at an empty junction box.
So if a supplier can't tell you which Zigbee profile their gear uses, treat that with the same suspicion you'd treat a missing safety certification. Wait—that's too strong. It's not a safety issue. It is a project risk, though. And project risk is a cost, even when it's not on the invoice.
Installers need real numbers, not "easy to install"
"How to hang a pendant light with cord" gets thousands of searches, and most tutorial content answers it in five steps: cut power, measure, connect wires, mount the canopy, done.
Those steps are correct as far as they go. But as someone who checks fixtures before they're installed in commercial spaces, I've seen what happens when the details underneath those steps are missing. The strain relief at the cord entry. The wire gauge across the full drop. The damp-location rating. The maximum ceiling angle for the canopy. These details decide whether the installation is legal, safe, and actually lasts—not just whether it looks fine on day one.
When I compared two pendant light batches from different vendors in 2023, side by side—same style, similar price—I finally understood why specification depth matters so much. One spec sheet said "cord: 72 inches." The other said "cord: 72 inches, 18 AWG, UL-listed, strain relief tested to 20 lbs, damp-location rated." Same product category. One gave the electrician a complete answer. The other left the important questions for the moment of installation, when returning the product is no longer practical.
In commercial projects, those missing details become change orders. Change orders become disputes. And disputes are almost always more expensive than the fixture itself—actually, more expensive than the quality fixture the buyer should have chosen in the first place.
The objection I keep hearing
Here's a common pushback: "Shouldn't the buyer ask for the full spec? Isn't that their responsibility?"
Partially. But a B2B buyer sourcing forty line items for a hotel renovation can't interrogate every spec sheet for what's missing. They rely on suppliers who give them the truth up front.
We've made that mistake ourselves. In 2023, one of our datasheets omitted the PWM frequency for a driver. A customer's installation developed a visible flicker, and it cost us a rework credit and an honest conversation with their electrical contractor. That experience changed how we write specs. Now we assume the buyer won't ask—so the answer has to be on the page.
Far more common, though, is the supplier who ships a known deviation to make a deadline. I once flagged a batch of downlights claiming 50,000 hours of lifetime. The test data provided after I pushed for it showed 36,000. Their defense? "It's within industry standard." We rejected the batch and made them redo it. Was that harsh? Maybe. But our customer's total cost of ownership—meaning unit price plus energy, maintenance, and premature replacement—depends on that number being true. Good lighting is lifespan, color consistency, and compatibility, not just raw lumens per watt.
Why I'll keep rejecting shipments

Because our customers are quality teams, reviewers, and integrators who will hold us to the spec we published. So here's my bottom line: when you're buying LED fixtures or displays, ask the questions that expose hidden costs. "What's not included?" "Which Zigbee version?" "What's the cord rating?" "What are the IES LM-80 lumen-maintenance data points?" And treat vague answers the same way you'd treat a missing certification—because the goal isn't to find the lowest quote. It's to find the supplier whose quote you can calculate.
That's the only spec I won't compromise on. As of March 2025, that hasn't changed.
